During my windshield survey i took time to walk along the Greenbelt near downtown area and spoke with several people regarding their thoughts on what they would like to see improved in Kingsport. Most of those comments reflected better air and water quality. I agreed as the smell was a bit foul (egg) coming from the local plants. These individuals also spoke of family members whose health had declined while working at the factories. Sense of smell had dimmished as well as increased asthma/allergies were more pronouced as people grew older. Cancer seemed more prevalent.
It was interesting to note that while walking the Greenbelt I did not see anyone fishing even though signs posted hours. I asked pedestrians their thoughts on this and found that people were not inclined to fish as they believed the water could be contaminated from previous spills and did not feel comfortable fishing in the area below the local plants. Most people felt fishing was safer at the Holston River in Bristol. Increased service hours and distance to further edges of city for KATS were also mentioned . Once citizen felt that qualityof the air/water had improved from better emmission legislation. As citizens it is our responsiblity to make our concerns known to local and state legislatures through email and letters to the editor of the Kingsport Times News.
